The big weekend...

It's the big three-0...

breaking in yet another decade of life. i wonder what the 30's are going to be like.
it's been pretty interesting up to here...

but guess what i get to do this weekend. yes...i get to practice reading my abstract in korean in preparation for my thesis defense. it's not all that bad i suppose...i've had worse bdays...

here's to the big 30!
and until monday (the day of my defense) it's all about clay, sex, and AIDS...in korean!

yay!

mosquito killer racket zapper thing...

it's getting hot - and humid - again which means the return of the dreaded mosquitoes...

but this time i'm prepared. no more midnight rude awakenings looking for mosquitoes.
no more chasing their buzzing and missed swatting

i've got this:

mosquitoes beware!

repetition...

my preparing for my thesis defense which is coming up in about a week. nothing very interesting as i spend most of my time reading my abstract over and over again...in korean. the thesis defense consists of my reading my abstract for the last time and having a Q&A with my profs. i'm not too worried about the questions...just being able to read the abstract like a college high school...just being able to read the abstract...

in the meanwhile, i am also thinking about some ideas for the hospital project. I have an idea of what I would like to do in the VIP lounge, but it's the lobby that is getting to me. one: it's a huge space and two: it's a high traffic area so i don't want to make some crap. i have decided, however, to go with tiles...

anyhow, i gotta get some rest. i'm tired...

I thought I was bringing this trip to an end...

but it seems that after my show, which is to mark the end of my living-stint in korea, i have so much more to do.

i went to visit the gifts n acquisitions dept at yonsei-severance hospital to find out where i would be displaying my work. in order for me to start the project i need to know how large i need to make it. i was told that some areas were "reserved" and that other artists have purchased the areas. i figured that would limit my options greatly. i told them that i had two spaces in mind.

the first spot was in the lobby. to the right. above the escalators going down to the ER. a bit ambitious i admit. the 4.5m x 3.5m was...available. my heart jumped because i had my spot. but what was a great surprise to me was when they asked me where i wanted my second piece. 2 spots?!!? nice!

the second spot would be in the VIP suites. i didn't want to be in any one room because that would limit people from viewing my work. so i chose a blank wall in the hallway. this area measures approx 1.5m x 1m.

two big projects.

but a friend called the other day. she is a curator for Cais Gallery. she told me about how she took her red sperm to work one day and the director of the gallery said, "you have on too!?"
one thing led to another and my friend yoo-sun is asking me to send her my portfolio!

what's this mean? another show? i'm supposed to leave in july after all. i have to present my thesis in june, finish two large scale projects and have another show? but apparently, the director is interested in purchasing some work or selling some work or something.

i told my mom i might be coming home a bit later.

retrovirus...

pictures from the show will be updated soon....real soon...really...

No rest...

The show started and now it's over...that was quick.
so now i must take down the show which should be a pain because now it's starting to rain. hopefully it doesn't rain tuesdays morning because that's the day the moving truck comes to move my works back home...

I think it was a good show and a great experience. i sure learned a lot and took a lot of notes about what I would do next time.

it was great having family and friends come out and share the experience with me as well. i know i'm going to miss them when they go back home...but i'll be heading back their way soon enough.

so what's next. i have to get my thesis in order and defend it but here is the great news.

i have been commissioned to create a large public space piece for the Yonsei University Severance Hospital. I am going to check out the possible spaces and if i heard right, i will be working on two pieces!

looks like i'm busy again...

Mid show...

Man, the opening was crazy busy. i don't recall a night where i was so busy. i didn't even have time to be nervous and have my food cravings. but alas it is over...for now anyways. the show ends on the 5th so i gotta make my way to the gallery and just check up on things. i own tons of thanks to many people...

i went today in fact and it was kinda neat to see the AIDS wall slowly disappear (pictures will be updated on the retrovirus site soon). a group of people came to film at the gallery as well so i look forward to getting some film footage of me explaining my art to some girl checking out the work. sweet!

the family is off to jeju today to enjoy their holiday. and while i'm here i'm happy to be with my friend adam who flew out from LA to be at the show. you can check out what he has to say on his blog (www.dailyclerks.com). don't forget to check out his flickr sets...

but i'm in need of some serious rest so i'm hitting the sack. thanks for all the support from all of you out there...i promise to upload the retrovirus page with pics soon so that you can see all the work.
